Our Expertise
Stuttering is a complex disorder rooted in speech-motor differences impacting a person’s verbal communication.
On its surface, stuttering is the interruption of speech with disfluencies, such as unintended repetitions, hesitations, prolongations, and blocks. However, the disorder goes much deeper than these overt characteristics, and may involve other physiological, social, emotional, and cognitive aspects which can further influence a person’s ability to speak effectively.
At the Chicago Stuttering Center, we know you’re more than just your speech, and so we focus on a holistic approach individualized to your experiences and goals. With every client, we explore social-emotional, physical, and cognitive aspects of communication to go beyond stuttering and achieve real and lasting change.
What Can I Expect?
Our evaluations begin with a comprehensive discussion on what you’re looking for, whether it’s more fluency, better communication tips, a refresher of previously learned strategies, or exploring how to navigate daily speaking situations.
From there, we develop a plan of care with goals specific to your situation, and start meeting regularly for therapy on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis.
We work with every client on education, awareness, advocacy, and management strategies, so you can speak confidently and effectively in every communication situation you’re in.
Whether you’re a parent looking for therapy for your child or an adult looking for your own support, we’ll partner with you to create a unique program that meets your needs and goals.
